Making a Penthouse Into a Custom Suite
An interior renovation that added personal style and functional upgrades to a modern penthouse in Calgary
A Total Interior Transformation in Calgary, Alberta
At Kavaleer Renovations, we believed a home should reflect the people living in it, not just the selections made during construction. The Lebel Crescent Penthouse project demonstrated how thoughtful upgrades could completely reshape a brand-new condo that didn’t yet feel personal.
The homeowners, Sue and Dave, initially connected with one of our preferred interior designers to furnish their newly built penthouse. As conversations evolved, it became clear that furniture alone wouldn’t achieve the level of refinement they were hoping for. The designer reached out to us to bring deeper customization to the space.

Timeline
We began this project on June 23, 2025, and estimated to have it done by Sept. 23, 2025. We completed it by Sept. 30, 2025, before the owners returned from traveling abroad.
Location
Calgary, Alberta
Project Goals Summarized
- Elevate a newly built penthouse beyond standard builder selections
- Introduce customized features that supported daily living
- Add depth and texture through millwork, trim, wallpaper, and lighting
- Complete the project within a fixed timeline while the clients were abroad
Project Overview
-
Location: Lebel Crescent, Calgary, Alberta
-
Project Type: Interior Remodel
-
Investment: $270,000
-
Construction Start Date: June 23, 2025
-
Completion Date: Sept. 30, 2025
Although the condo was newly constructed, many areas felt flat and unfinished. The goal was not to change the layout, but to introduce detail, warmth, and tailored functionality throughout the home.

Project Goals
Although the penthouse was newly built, it lacked the detailing and functionality Sue and Dave wanted. The goal was to introduce permanent, built-in elements that added structure and purpose without altering the floor plan.
The renovation focused on:
- Installing millwork, trim, and wall paneling throughout
- Building a fully detailed office with integrated electrical
- Converting the sitting room into a media lounge with a hidden door
- Constructing a built-in bar along a blank wall
- Customizing storage in the entry and primary closet
- Replacing standard hardware and light fixtures
- Completing all work within a fixed, pre-set timeline
The Scope of Work
Rather than reworking the structure, we focused on carefully selected upgrades that transformed the overall feel of the home.
Living Areas
We introduced millwork and trim details throughout the main spaces and built a custom bar into an unused wall near the living room, creating both storage and a focal point.
Office
The office was upgraded with premium millwork and improved electrical features, resulting in a workspace that felt polished and purposeful.
Media / Lounge
An existing sitting room was converted into a cozy media lounge, complete with a hidden door that added character and function.
Primary Suite
We customized the walk-in closet with tailored storage solutions that improved organization and usability.
Powder Room
Wall paneling, wallpaper, upgraded lighting, and new plumbing fixtures changed the powder room into a standout feature of the home.
Kitchen
We replaced standard cabinet hardware with higher-end selections that better aligned with the overall design direction.

Materials and Finishes
The Lebel Crescent penthouse started with clean lines and neutral finishes, but it lacked the richness the homeowners were looking for. The transformation centered on introducing materials that weren't just decorative but would feel refined and last for years.
Key material decisions included:
- Custom Millwork and Paneling: Built-up trim profiles and wall paneling gave scale and proportion to previously blank surfaces, adding shadow lines and architectural weight throughout the home.
- Nuanced Paint Selections: A spectrum of warm greys, deep greens, and saturated accents was used to define rooms and emphasize detail, with varied sheens adding subtle contrast.
- Dekton Surfaces: The Onirika Morpheus finish brought movement and durability to select built-ins and work areas, offering a modern surface that balanced beauty with performance.
- Brass Lighting Elements: Aged and lacquered brass fixtures introduced warmth and presence overhead, countering the cooler base palette without overpowering it.
- Curated Hardware: Satin nickel, graphite, and bronze tones were assigned intentionally by room, reinforcing the character of each space rather than repeating a single finish throughout.
The result was not a dramatic structural shift, but a careful layering of materials that gave the penthouse depth, permanence, and a stronger sense of identity.
Renovation Challenges
Before we could even start, we coordinated approvals with the condo board, mapped out work hours, and booked elevator access for materials and trade movement. We set up the protection of hallways, common areas, and the unit itself immediately, which was especially important since the condo was brand new.
Because much of the original build remained in place, protecting those surfaces was a must. We had to carefully cover and monitor the floors, cabinetry, glazing, and mechanical systems while we completed the millwork and finishes. The sequencing mattered as well. We planned installations so trades weren’t working over one another or risking damage to untouched areas.
At the same time, the original builder needed access to address HVAC warranty items. Rather than letting that disrupt progress, we coordinated schedules so their team could complete inspections and adjustments while we continued our work.
The timeline was firm, so we could not afford any disruptions to the timeline. Sue and Dave were overseas and returning on a set date. That meant not only finishing the carpentry and detailing, but also coordinating furniture delivery, artwork placement, and final cleaning. When they walked through the door, everything was complete and ready — no loose ends, no delays.
A Remodel That Made a Penthouse Feel Like a Forever Home
By the end of September, the Lebel Crescent penthouse felt entirely different. The added detailing, tailored storage, upgraded finishes, and refined lighting brought depth and personality to the space. What had once felt like a standard new build became a home that reflected its owners.
This project showed how strategic customization, even in a brand-new condo, could dramatically shift how a space looked, felt, and functioned.
